  • London EcoBarbie #6 Karl Lagerfeld

    LONDON ECO BARBIE –
Life’s not fair but at least my pants are..

    #6 Karl Lagerfeld
    By Amy Whitney

One of the largest problems concerning those fighting climate change is captivating the view of key players in the world economy that have the power to make a difference. Karl Lagerfield created drama at the Chanel ‘A/W 10′ show; plunging the Grand Palais audience into freezing temperatures of the Arctic. At the heart of catwalk a polar icecap sat eight metres tall, in a pool of its own meltwater. The atmosphere echoed the chilling reality of global warming.

Karl worked with Tweed, chiffon and wool to imitate the fur outfits today’s fashionistas crave. However not a single fur had been shed in the making of this poignant collection. Other fashion houses may follow. Chanel bravely providing what consumers want with a serious fashion message.

  • London EcoBarbie #5 Tate Gallery

    By Heather 6th April 10

    LONDON ECO BARBIE –
Life’s not fair but at least my pants are..

    #5 Tate Gallery
    By Amy Whitney

A desire to explore hidden areas of London led me to the Tate Gallery. Free, cultural and perfect for rainy days. The breezy space boasts a beautiful collection of classic artwork by the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Van Gogh. However what really drew my attention were the works of modern artists such as Ed Ruscha demonstrating the power of media, he portrays global warming, the Tate reaches large audiences from many nations.

Whereas consumerism and desire is experienced in the work of American artist Jeff Coons provoking the question of good and bad taste in my own consumption habits.

The pieces gave me inspiration to attempt some climate change artwork of my own, COPArt on Climate Squads website. Please take the time to pop along and visit the Tate Modern when your in London, its well worth it.

  • Come and help us spread the Climate Squad message in Central London on Friday night…

    By Rachel 17th September 09

I’m really excited as I’ve just found out that I’ve got a spot on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square as part of sculptor Antony Gormley’s One & Other public art project, where members of the public get to spend an hour on the plinth. Gormley has said the project is “about people coming together to do something extraordinary and unpredictable.” I think that’s exactly what the Climate Squad is about too and this is a great chance to campaign about our cause.

My slot is between 1am and 2am this Friday night/Saturday morning, 19 September. I’m asking for your help and support getting the word out about my fourth plinth slot and the work that we do, so it would be great if you could come along and bring your friends too!

Any suggestions or ideas about how I spend my hour up there would be really appreciated, and remember that if you can’t come along, there’s a live feed of the plinth sponsored by TV channel skyARTS, so tune in at www.oneandother.com.

  • Play to stop

    By Fil 2nd September 09

MTV and the European Commission have organised a competition to raise awareness on Climate Change issues and promote sustainable behaviours.

Through the “Play to Stop” website you can create your profile, involve your friends and express your feelings and concerns relating to Climate Change by posting blogs and videos. This, together with weekly tests you can find on the website, will allow you to gain points, thus giving you the chance to win competitions to attend live performances of some of the most current renowned artists!

The only concern from the Climate Squad team is that winners are flown to attend the gigs!  The site features a ‘have your say’ box if you want to comment on this or provide other green messages.

Get involved by checking out the website!

  • Radical Nature Month!

    By Heather 1st September 09

17th August – 17th September is Radical Nature month and the Barbican Art Gallery, London, is going all out to celebrate the occasion by hosting a number of events. To kick of the month, Kit Hammonds, an independent curator and tutor at the Royal College of Art will be delivering a “Green Talk”. Green Talks will be running throughout the month alongside the gallery and exhibition, and will be delivered by a number of Art related guests including Ariella Yedgar, Francesco Manacorda and Joel Robinson. The talks will be focussing on binding relations between art, nature and climate change with discussions on environmental issues. If you are interested in volunteering to take part in the Climate Squad CopArt project then these events may give you a great insight into the link between art and climate change that may help you formulate great ideas to bring to the table!

For those of you who haven’t heard about it, CopArt is a project run by Climate Squad giving our volunteers the chance to take part in forming a piece of artwork that will be taken to the United Nations Climate Change conference in Copenhagen this December. The art will be viewed by the world leaders themselves and so is a great opportunity for you to express your concerns about climate change in a big way! If you would like more information on CopArt, register your interest with Climate Squad.

  • Climate Squad on the Fourth Plinth!

    By Fil 28th August 09

If you have not already heard, members of the public have an incredible opportunity to become living art on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London.

Sculptor Antony Gormley is creating an astonishing living monument, by asking people to occupy the spare plinth for one hour, under the eyes of the passing public and the Sky Arts cameras. The representation, running 24 hours a day for 100 days, is entitled “One and Others” and enables people to become their own representation,  giving them the chance to be in the focus for a short while.

This would be a great opportunity to raise awareness of climate change, and even help  promote Climate Squad in the process.

If you’re interested, you can apply through the “One and Others” website: deadline is set on the 1st of September, and the Artwork is going to last until the end of October.
